Design work is scope work: the invoice should mirror the proposal — package, included revision rounds, and paid overages — so the number is never a surprise. This template prefills that structure with the two lines every designer eventually needs: the overage round, and the source-files-on-payment term.
The notes block does designer-specific work: it lists delivered formats (clients lose files; your invoice is the record), states the rights transfer, and flags font licensing — the three things that generate “quick question” emails for years if left unsaid.
Pricing structure that survives clients
Package pricing (identity suite, defined deliverables, N revision rounds) outperforms hourly for brand work — clients buy outcomes. Keep hourly ($65–150 typical US range) for production tasks and retainer overflow. Either way, name included rounds on the line; billing overage only works if the included count was visible.
For retainers, invoice monthly with a rollover policy stated (“up to 20 hrs; unused hours don’t roll” or your variant). Retainer disputes are always rollover disputes.
Rights, files and the final lever
Standard practice: full rights transfer on full payment, with the designer retaining portfolio use. Say both on the invoice. If you price rights tiers (logo buyout vs limited use), the tier belongs in the line description so the price reads correctly.
Source files (AI/working files) released on final payment is the profession’s collection mechanism — gentler than a late fee and more effective. List exported formats delivered now, source formats on payment.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I charge for a logo?
Freelance identity work commonly runs $800–5,000+ depending on scope (marks, system, guidelines) and market; hourly production work $65–150. Price the package, itemize what it includes, and charge stated rates for extra rounds.
How many revision rounds should be included?
Two rounds is the industry default, written on the line item. Additional rounds at a fixed price per round — visible on this template — keeps “one more tiny thing” from consuming your margin.
Is graphic design taxable?
Frequently yes when delivering final artwork/digital goods (several US states tax design deliverables; VAT/GST applies where registered). The design-services vs deliverables distinction matters in some states — check yours.
When do I hand over source files?
On full payment, as stated on the invoice. Deliver production formats (PNG/PDF/SVG exports) with the final round; AI/working files follow the wire transfer. It is the profession’s standard, not hostility.
