A payment receipt connects money received to the charge it settles. This template starts with an invoice-reference line, the full amount entered as paid and a place for the payment method or transaction reference.
For a partial payment, set the line to the original charge or installment being tracked and enter only the amount received in “Amount paid.” The remaining balance stays visible. Issue a separate receipt for each later payment so the sequence can be reconciled.
Connect the receipt to the original invoice
Include the invoice number, payer, receipt date, amount and method. If the payment covers several invoices, list each allocation separately instead of recording one unexplained total.
The receipt confirms payment; it does not replace the original invoice or change the underlying tax treatment. Keep both documents and the transaction confirmation together.
Record partial and final payments
For a deposit or installment, describe the milestone and enter the amount received. Do not mark the document paid in full when an invoice balance remains.
When the final payment clears, issue the last receipt with the same invoice reference and update the private invoice tracker so the customer balance and payment records agree.
