GST Invoice Format

A GST-ready starting point with editable GSTIN, HSN/SAC, place-of-supply and tax fields.

This generator provides editable fields commonly used on an Indian GST tax invoice: supplier and recipient information, GSTIN, item descriptions with HSN or SAC codes, taxable value, tax rate, place of supply and a unique invoice number.

The 18% rate is an editable example, not a recommendation. Classification, rate, place-of-supply treatment, reverse charge and e-invoicing depend on the actual supply. Verify those decisions against current CBIC guidance or with a qualified adviser.

Rule 46 particulars to check

CBIC Rule 46 lists particulars including the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; a serial number unique for the financial year; date; recipient details where applicable; HSN or accounting code; description and quantity; taxable value; tax rate and amount; place of supply for inter-state transactions; delivery address where different; and whether reverse charge applies.

This tool has flexible line descriptions and notes for those details, but it does not validate a GSTIN, classify a supply, identify the required HSN/SAC precision or register an invoice with the Invoice Registration Portal.

Rate, tax type and e-invoicing are separate checks

Confirm the current rate for the exact HSN or SAC. Then determine the place of supply and whether CGST plus SGST or IGST applies. Do not rely on the prefilled example to make either decision.

Businesses within the current e-invoicing scope have additional IRP, IRN and QR-code obligations. A downloaded PDF from this tool is not an IRP registration and does not by itself establish filing validity.

Frequently asked questions

When do I use CGST and SGST instead of IGST?

That depends on the location of the supplier and the legally determined place of supply. Intra-state supplies generally use CGST and SGST; inter-state supplies generally use IGST. Confirm the place-of-supply rule for the transaction before labeling the tax.

Is a PDF from this generator automatically valid for GST filing?

No. The tool helps format a document but does not validate the underlying tax decisions or complete any required IRP registration. Check Rule 46 particulars and current e-invoicing requirements before issue.

How should GST invoices be numbered?

Rule 46 requires a consecutive serial number, in one or multiple series, unique for the financial year and containing up to 16 characters. Configure the number to fit your accounting controls.

What if the buyer is not GST-registered?

Recipient particulars vary by transaction value and supply type. Leave the GSTIN blank only when appropriate and confirm the current Rule 46 requirements for the recipient address, state and place of supply.
